Zanzibar

Zanzibar

I have always been a fan of used book stores.  Years ago I visited a large used book store in Dallas and purchased a box load of travel books.  Among the books was one written by the daughter of a member of the Sultan of Oman’s harem.  She was born and raised on the island of Zanzibar where the Sultan owned tea plantations.  The book was enchanting and I added Zanzibar to my list of places to visit.  I love exotic names like Zanzibar, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva.  In January I visited the island of Zanzibar which lies off the east coast of Africa and is part of Tanzania.  The first stop on my guided tour was the ruins of the palace of the Sultan of Oman. There I walked through the harem rooms and baths and thought of the girl that lived there.  I felt her presence and those of the people that once enjoyed the idyllic life.  It was a nice moment.
