Reunion Island

Reunion Island

Reunion Island is off the east coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean.  When I visited the island in January,  I was surprised to discover that it was a part of France.  Their phone system was tied directly to France.  The island was modern with universities and hospitals.  The volcanoes on the island were high above the ocean and the cauldron was quite scenic when viewed from above.  Most of all I was shocked at the beautiful wide coastal highways and the modern infrastructure.  The town resembled a French town and the inhabitants speak French.  I was told by my guide that the European Union funds the island and that the EU contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to build the coastal highway.  Several Europeans in the tour commented that they were not happy that their EU taxes are spent funding highways on a remote island in the Indian Ocean.  I don’t blame them one bit.  Being from Texas I could not imagine living on an island in the middle of the ocean but the inhabitants I spoke with seem to love the place.
