Porcupine Problem

Porcupine Problem

I now have a porcupine ringing the fruit trees.  Now that my daughter and the dog are out of the yard, the porcupine has come to eat the tender bark of the fruit trees.  He or she has ringed two of my peach trees and is now working on the pear tree.   The trees will die if this continues.  Two of the fruit trees are 15 years old and I will be very angry and sad if they die.   I normally don’t kill varmints, just feral hogs, but fruit trees produce food.  I went on the internet to see if there was some household substance to put around the tree to discourage the porcupine.  All I found were websites that tried to induce me to buy their repel product that would be good for a month.   One website suggested trapping the porcupine.  Since I have a live trap, I baited it as suggested with slices of apple covered in salt.   My live trap has worked well in the past.  I have trapped and killed over 50 coons in the last year.  They are mean, pesky critters, not cute little bandits in the photos.  They will eat dog and cat food and dump garbage cans and crawl in the back of a pickup and wreak havoc with anything that smells like food.  They are scavengers.  I’ll see if I caught the porcupine when I go down to the creek bottom to do ranch chores this morning.
