Yesterday Bobby and I drove to San Antonio for an eye doctor appointment. We made the trip worthwhile by stopping in Kerrville for supplies, lunch, lumber and gas. The stores and streets were busy in the morning hours. As we had lunch, the restaurant was crowded, mostly with women carrying Christmas shopping bags loaded with purchases. Christmas music was playing. The highway to San Antonio was busy with trucks and cars and the boulevard on which the doctor’s office lies was full of traffic. I wondered where all those people were going and why they weren’t at work. Everywhere we drove, the people were out there. What are they doing and where are they going? Living on a remote ranch with no neighbors, we see few people and I sometimes go weeks without leaving the ranch and am quite content. Going out into society is disconcerting and normally we can’t wait to return home to the peace and quiet. How can all those busy people remain serene and calm living out there and how can they think with all the distractions. I am pretty sure I am ruined by the silence and beauty of nature. No city life for me.
