New York City
I just returned from a few days in New York City. While I had visited New York City this last October on a fall foliage expedition, I never got the feel of the city. A girlfriend had a two for one ticket so we flew from San Antonio to Dallas and to La Guardia. Our reservations were at the Waldorf Astoria. The taxi dirver was from the Dominican Republic and while we were told that the distance was far, it was only 30 minutes and less than $30. We remarked that they didn’t really know what distance was about. I drive 60 miles for groceries. That was the first of the mythbusting. The doorman and personnel at the Waldorf were very friendly and helplful to two Texas girls, not really girls. The taxi driver to China Town was from Bangladesh. He too was helpful. We wandered the streets until we were satisfied with a restaurant. By that time we were starving and as we pondered the multi-paged menu we asked for a snack and were presented with a sprout salad and soybeans complimentary. A picture of a bowl of snails was intriguing. We ordered the bowl of steamed snails, shrimp in dumplings and crab rolls. What a surprise. Our first challenge of the trip. More tomorrow.
