Hunting Season

Hunting Season

Featured in the picture is an axis buck, an exotic import from India. This morning begins the ritual known out here in the Hill Country as hunting season. For the past few months hunters from all over Texas and beyond have been coming out to set up their blinds and feeders on land they have leased for hunting. Pickups loaded with corn, four-wheelers and coolers are dominating the highways. City folks dressed in cammo fill their shopping baskets with beer and food and boost the local economy. We love them and hate them. Most of the time the deer win the war. Many more survive than are killed. We tolerate the 2 1/2 months of deer season, dealing with hunters and hearing stories of their follies. This morning the sunset is light pink and orange. The wind is still and the temperature is in the 40’s. Before daylight I heard a truck drive through the ranch. I have not yet heard any gunshots. I hope I don’t.
