Hard to begin with a defining moment. There have been so many of them. I suppose one of the first was stepping off the plane in Paro, Bhutan and breathing the Himalayan air, looking at Mt. Everest in the distance. I had been flying for days. Houston to Los Angeles with a long layover, then to Hong Kong but rerouted to Korea due to shortage of fuel consumed by the headwinds. Long sit on the plane in Seoul before arriving in Hong Kong too late to make the flight to Bangkok. Ten hours in the Hong Kong airport and then the four-hour flight to Bangkok. A few short hours of sleep before returning to the airport at 5 a.m. for the flight to Bhutan with a stop in Calcutta. By the time I arrived in the Buddhist country, I was ready to meditate. I could not believe where I was. The weeks spent in Bhutan were heavenly and with the altitude I was closer to the heavens than ever before.
