Cashew Nuts

Cashew Nuts

The cashew nut is at the bottom of the displayed fruit. While in Phuket, Thailand I visited a cashew nut factory. Only one nut is produced from the fruit which is basically inedible. The nuts are shelled by hand, the sheller receiving about $5 per day according to how many nuts he shells. No wonder the nuts are so expensive. After the demonstration and short lecture I went into the showroom where I was given a glass of cashew nut juice. It was green and frothy and I was assured that it was very healthy, almost medicinal. I was also told that cashew nuts are good for lowering cholesterol. I don’t believe it. The cashew nut juice tasted awful. I then sampled the varieties of cashew nuts for sale. There were flavored as chili, honey, sesame, butter, chocolate, green tea and others too numerous to recall. They were all tasty. I purchased the sesame and the chocolate flavored ones. The city of Phuket is a lovely resort area and the weather was hot, tropical and humid. There were handicraft stalls along the dock and I purchased some nice colorful cotton blouses. It was obvious why Phuket is a tourist destination with many European tourists in evidence.
