Bucharest, Romania

Bucharest, Romania is only 60 kilometers from the Danube River.  The city has a population of over 2 million and proudly had oil lamps in 1857 before Paris or Vienna.  The city was known as the Paris of eastern Europe.  Most amazing was the colossal palace of the Parliament, the second largest building in the world.  The Pentagon is the largest.  Nicolae Ceausescu, the dictator, commissioned 20,000 laborers who worked three shits a day for 5 years.  The palace was not complete when he and his wife were executed.  Much of the historic part of the city was demolished in order to build the palace.  I loved the jokes about the Communists.  A man ordered a car and when he was informed when it would be ready in five years, he asked if the time would be in the morning or in the afternoon.  When asked why he was concerned, he replied that the plumber was coming in the morning.  Their sense of humor was refreshing.
