Axis Deer

Axis Deer

Unbelievable Picture taken by a surveillance camera here on the ranch,, Ambush Hill. I’m not crazy about surveillance cameras when they interfere with my freedom but on a ranch with feeders and traps, they are invaluable for seeing what animals are hiding in the brush, canyons and rocky hills in Texas. The meat of the axis deer is delicious, not gamey at all and they are prized for their meat. They weight more than the native deer and the hides are more colorful. They are commonly know as the most beautiful deer in the world and their country of origin is India. The bucks grow long antlers, usually with three point on each side. A large male will weigh 250 pounds while a female will weigh 100 pounds. Being from a tropical climate with no noticeable winters, the axis deer have developed to grow antlers and breed during any month of the year. They are truly spectacular as seen in the photo.
